Well ;
there _isn't_ any rear shaft seal , the ball has a large o-ring where it fits against the retaining plate and then there's the paper gakset / shims use to properly adjust the tension of the ball into the back of the tranny ~ it's pretty simple if time consuming , you must polish out all the ridges hammered into the ball with 1,000 grit (or finer) then test fit it , sans o-ring and add shims (the paper gaskets) under the retaining plate untill the ball is snug but will move with a light pull .
Then take at all apart again and install the u-joint and ball etc. .
NOTE : it is SUPPOSED to drip a little bit from the ball ! they dripped when new . finding and usiing a leather o-ring (leather shop ?) reduces this greatly over the synthetic o-rings now provided
There are supposed to be leather washers in the threaded cap at the rear end of the ball piece too , these clamp and prevent drips out there .
I hope this helps , IIRC it's all covered in detail in the factory shop manual , they're only $29.00 or so from Chevy Duty...
