First check to see if it is going all the way into gear, by checking the linkage adjustment. If it is then the problem is most likey internal/ Detents of slide forks. Rebuild or get another.

Check your transmission and engine mounts. If they are worn or broken. They will cause the engine to torque up and lift. When this occurs, cause binding and excessive pressure to the shifter rods. I myself have personally experienced this, and although this may not be your problem, it my be wise to check them. Grab a buddy and give it a look.
