tree vs. floor

I'm looking at converting my 3 speed manual back to an automatic. Is there any benefit to a floor shifter over a column shifter or is it just a coolness factor? I'd like to put it back on the tree to free up the floor space, but I'm sure it's more of a pain in the ass to deal with re-installing a column shifter.
Any opinions?

I also did the same thing and now I regret doing that, I have looked in to making my floor shifter better and to my suprise theres Is a hurst shifter kit to shorten your gaps between gears. I am currently looking for the parts I need for the three on the tree but not having to much success.
