What model do I have?

My Grandpa gave me his 87 GMC Pickup. But I don't Know anything about GMC trucks. On the side it says Sierra 1500, but when I look for parts and stuff everything says C-20 S-15 etc. On the title it says R 15 CONV.
Someone please tell me what I have! Thanks

What you have is a 1987 R10. It's exactly like a C10 from previous years, they just changed the letters. (for no reason at all).

Second of all, your 87 is the first year for fuel injection in Chevy trucks.
Third, if you are looking for parts, you'll want to find something that says C10 or 1/2 ton pickup.
The "Sierra" part of it is the trim level:
If it's a Sierra, it's the base model
If it's a High Sierra, it's the next level up
If it's a Sierra Classic, it's the highest trim, or the "luxury trim"

I'm not sure what the CONV stands for - I think it may be "Conventional Cab" If it's a 2 door cab. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's it, because right around then, they had come out with the extended 4-door cab. So, that's what CONV is for - Conventional Cab

I thought that the R15 CONV might be that it has 15" wheels. I am not sure. I don't know what was original, or the reason for doing it.

OH YEA, GMC

Here's a quick history of the similarity of GMC and Chevy names:
Chevrolet
---------
C10
C20
C30

and GMC's SAME vehicle is like this
--------------
C15
C25
C35

Basically, all they do is change the last digit to a 5, to show distinction between the 2. So while your truck is a half ton, it's not a R10 (because that's Chevrolet's version), rather, it's a R15

Also, yes, your truck has 15 inch wheels, but that's not what the 15's for.

As someone else already explained, the truck is a 1/2 ton, 2 wheel drive, conventional cab GMC, which is the same as a C15 GMC, C10 Chevy. GM switched to the R (2WD) and V (4WD) designations for some reason in the later models.

This vintage of GM truck is an excellent vehicle, and very inexpensive for parts and maintenance. Almost every part for this truck is still available from standard parts stores (Advance Auto, etc.) or the GM dealer. Gas mileage is in the horrible range, but that's the only downside.
