Well, the video I promised of a nice smoky burnout never happened. The supposed "rebuilt engine" was a bust. The studs on the heads were not installed properly so the lifters couldn't adjusted properly & one of the cylinders was washed. Turns out the shop that built it is closed and if this is an indication of the quality of their work I see why. Now this could have been an easy fix, but I decided to cut my losses & just go with a crate engine. Got this 350 from Jegs today & if you're keeping count, yes this is engine #4 but hopefully the last because this one comes with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. We'll see how this goes....

OOOOoooohhhhhhhhhh............

As much as I'm a Die Hard InLiner , seeing a brandy new engine in the Factory Crate , is a glorious thing ! .

You're going to love this .

Consider Ram's Horn exhaust manifolds, they look great and work well too , available brandy new cheaply .

I'm cleaning up an engine for my truck then next year when I retire I plan to overhaul all the old engines I have littering my back yard , see if anyone wants good running Vintage InLine engines .

Prolly not but I'll have a good time building and breaking them in... :D .

Robert, what's the spec's. on the Jeg's motor.. or maybe the Jeg's P/N?

John

Crate vs. Rebuild

Thanks for posting the spec's. Charles.

I don't think a fella could get a SBC rebuilt today for $1,500? I paid $1,400 in 1996 to get the SBC for my Model A rebuilt by my engine buildin' buddy Charlie.

The only part that sticks in my craw about the GM crate motors is the "Hecho En Mexico" part. I look at everything I buy.... and my wife gives me "that look" and tells me to "get over it". ;)

Merry Christmas indeed!!!

Outstanding gift idea, Robert! With that in there you could cruise all the way out here for some BBQ and adult beverage or two! :D

I had a dream...

that I had started up my 228. It sounded incredibly awesome. As I sat there listening to it, I remembered I had never installed the water pump! I quickly killed the engine, ran around and popped the hood. I was even more shocked to see that someone had removed the head! Oil and antifreeze all over my nice, new paint job!
Hey, it *did* sound nice, however. There is obviously a lot to be said for these old 6 bangers. Tough little engines!

Can't get a machine shop to do much for $1500.

I was told recently $1700 labor only to build a 383 out of a 350 four bolt engine I already have. Total bill would be around $6000. Target HP would be 450.
I'm finding out LS3, L99, and L92s are really climbing in price in salvage yards. They are so close to GM crate prices that it's almost a no-brainer to buy new! Crazy junk-men...

Zig:

Send me an e-mail address and I'll send you 228.MP3, an audio recording of my 228. You can sit in your truck and play it back.

Jegs has a Blueprint 383ci/ 430HP/ 450TQ with a 30 month 50,000 mile warranty for $3695. part #138-BP38313CT1

Thanks, Bill!

Bill~ Could you fire that baby up and drive it past Ken's house? That way it's just not idling away and it will allow me the opportunity to run my truck through the gears while I'm listening. THANKS! ;)

Engine Choices

Sigh .

Evan is right of course .

For me , not only does it have to be an InLiner , it also has to be built by me personally .

Talk about bleeding hemorrhoids , wasted time and Dollars .

Eventually it'll run the way I want it to so it's all good in the end .

I hate to say it but crate engines with Fuel Injection prolly make the most sense and are easiest to do .

Take that Hecho In Mexico Crate Engine and spray paint it CHEVROLET ORANGE , dress it how you like and you should be very happy .
