Folks, I'm probably gonna ask some stupid questions. I've played with old Deere and Ford tractors, and old Ford 2-2 1/2 ton trucks, but never much with a Chevrolet. Go ahead and laugh at my newbieness, just tell me what you're laughing about? ;)
 
Kens50, the old lady is sitting north of Gregory. The land down here is flat as a griddle--they all look the same ;)

Charles, thank you for that. It's not a coast truck and that's probably why. Lived its first 64 years out the other side of Del Rio, so not much humidity or salt air to mess with it. Right cab corner outside is kinda bubbly, but other than that, it feels and sounds pretty solid.

My first goal is to get plates on it, and now in Texas one must pass state inspection (regardless of age--truck OR owner lol) in order to get plates and sticker.

Hasn't been registered since 1987, hasn't been on road regular since '05 or so, according to previous owner. Looks like what I need to do, in this order, is make it go...then find some tires with actual tread on 'em instead of exposed casing....then make it stop. Once that's accomplished make it light up and bark (horn), then go to friendly inspector station and try to get their blessing in the form of "pass" paper and take it to the tax assessor and get plates.

Then, little by little, do the cosmetics in between loads of horse poo, caliche, hay, etc.

That's the plan, anyway :D
 
Welcome newbie !

That's a right nice looking rig you have there ~ we love working rigs , that's what they're designed for .

Look up ' tune up & valve adjust ' then go from there , these fine trucks are dead easy to work on and old dead ones for parts are every where , just get off the beaten track .
 
Dang Packrat! You even got Ken's50 to post a reply! Paint something read on that truck and you have a patriotic ride!
It looks like a great vehicle to do just want you intend. Any pictures of under the hood/inside the cab? More pictures of the bed?

Welcome Packrat! I'm from Kingsville, so I know just what you mean about the flatlands! You can climb up on a fencepost and see 20 miles in any direction :rolleyes: I now live just north of Houston, in Magnolia. Ask away with the questions, these guys know Everything, and they don't rag on ya' for asking either. Bill B.

Bill, nice to meet you, tocayo. I just ran a delivery down to Kingsville last week. Almost got the overpasses in around Bishop. Hard to recognize the place with all the hills :eek:

Hey Tocayo! I do know what that is! Lived and Worked in Kingsville for 32 years, for ExxonMobil. Retired in '09 and moved up here. I've got a '50 GMC 1/2 ton cab and chassis left from my build. If any of the parts can be used on your BIG Truck, you're welcome to them. It's located just outside of Orange Grove. Let me know if I can help. We're down there every couple of months still, as both our Moms are there. Take Care, Bill B.

Might be interested to take you up on that. Not sure if you looked at the pic link in my sig, but the inside of ol' Blue is kinda raggy. Plus, if you look closely, I've got one door with a vent window and one without. (Johnny Cash, we're talkin' bout you!) I'm sure I'll find more as I get into it.

Next time you're down this way, let me know, and we can see if the Dairy Queen in OG still knows what they're doing....on me :D

Yes, it is. Down to the 65 years of crud under the hood. Probably knock 500 lbs. off the tare weight if I spend half a day with the pressure washer on it....but then it'll start in rusting....

"Bone stock".... Exactly what I'm aiming for, too!
