Need help finding springs

Hey all, I have a 228 gmc engine and I need to find the two springs that connect to a pin on the block to the accelerator pedal linkage under the manifold area. Thanks

Welcome, maybe a link to an image of what you need ? .

The Old Car Manual Project has quite a few illustrated factory shop / parts manuals, maybe you can find a picture there and post it up? .

Probably the two springs shown here, index 8.5720. Looks like people had problems with them back in the 50s. See "Accelerator Control Rod Kit" at the bottom of the page.

The inner spring is GMC part # 593599 and the outer spring is 3650830. No size descriptions in the Master Parts Book.

You could probably find suitable springs at a good hardware store. If you'll buy me an ice cream cone the next time I see you, I'll take the springs off of my '52 GMC 150 and measure them for you.

And, there you go ! .

Accelerator and clutch/brake return springs are special, the wire used is thin and they tend to have more windings than you'd expect, this allows them to work well without having too much tension .
Now you know what the group number is, you should be able to find the part # in the other part of the parts manual .

Maybe Dorman has something ? .

Lots of older foreign cars with multiple carbys use springs like this, maybe look up under Porsche 912 1965 or Weber carby parts ? .

My old Mercedes Diesel use similar springs and they just go *poof* every s often so I carry spares salvaged at junkyards .

I also find them new at Auto Jumbles....

DO NOT use a strong spring here ! .

I tried googling both part #'s, no joy .

GMC specific, although the Chevrolet Master Parts Catalog for 1929-1954 lists all models of 1937 Chevy use the same 593599 spring. Its description is "pull back (2 1/2 approx. free length - two hook ends)".

Forgot to put it in my earlier post. The spring wire was 0.055" diameter on both springs.

Sorry so long before I could get back to you. Before I got on the phone to McMaster I decided to go to ace hardware and matched up some springs from their supply of springs. I didn’t get the number but they are easy to match as close as you can for pull strength and size. They are ALOT cheaper too. Cost me about 5 bucks
