Happy Holidays Everyone,

Simple Question, removing a 235 from a stock truck, and replacement with a 350, what is the best motor mount setup? Side block or front mount?

The V8 mounts sold by our host is front mount type?

I just put a 350 in my 59 this past summer. I went with the stock V-8 front mounts and now I am having second thoughts. With the fresh mounts I bought from our host, coupled with the original bell housing mounts my 350 is right up against the firewall. In fact the non stock valve covers are pressing against it and I am getting a little oil leakage from the valve covers.

I also wanted to go to an HEI ignition, but I don't have near the clearance to get the large distributor cap to fit. I went with the Petronix points replacement and I like how it performs, but I would have rather had the HEI.

I also have a little bit of a clearance issue with my headers and the stock streering box. My header is right up agains the box so I'm sure that the oil in the steering box is being cooked into black tar every time I get the moter up to temp.

I'm planning on rebuilding the front end this next summer and I am thinking about changing over to side block style with a new cross member and a new cross member for the transmission to sit on at the same time. If I do it I'll move the engine forward a few inches to get some more clearance..

Thanks for sharing the photos, looks great, there are no ugly Chevys. Well you answered my question, no front mounts. I already have the cross mount, but though it woukd be to combursom. I guess the 283 were smaller blocks and the front mounts worked well with that engine?

I thought they all were the same so when I had this problem of firewall clearance I was suprised. Maybe the off shore made mounts are a bit taller or something. I really had to squeeze to get the engine in at all. I had the front sheet metal off so that I had good access to the mounts. I think if I had left the fenders on I probably couldn't have got the thing bolted down at all.

I sure like the way she sets me back in the seat on launch now.:p

I 0wn a 1963 chevy truck. I went from the stock 6 to a 350. I used the stock mounts. They worked very well. Now I am using the same mounts with a big block 454. I don't think they changed fromm 1959 till 63. Check and see if the 59 are the same as the 63. I never had a problem. you can buy the mounts at any parts house. I hope this helps.Hondoe
 
Motor mounts v-8 1959

If my truck is the norm, then in 59 they still used the mounts on the front of the block and the bell housing for the v-8's. If you want to use the side mounts like the newer (probably post Task Force) trucks use, you have to get the cross member for under the engine and another cross member for under the transmission, and then those stock motor mounts that chevy used forever on v-8's will work.

I plan on using the mounts pictured, I did not want to have a cross member.



Lotroca, I removed the old 235 a year ago and installed a 250, with a 200r4 trans. You need a 250?

We will see if they work

The mounts to my suprise have a angle support under the top plate, haft way decent weld, I plan to connect some small items hoses, fuel lines, filter and wait on my transmission.

If I upset anyone with my last post sorry! My ride was a basket case when found!

If you go with a mid 70's Camaro sub frame you will solve a lot of problems and be much happier. Just a thought.
 
Engine and trans Installed

On Thursday transmission arrived, off work Friday installed engine and transmission, will size up new drive shaft, and start connecting crap.:)

My goal is to install alternator and get back on the road, then (shortly after front disk and power steering) then a Detroit belt system with air????? (black no crome)

looks good Steve,What type of shifter are you going to use? Column or floor ?
I used the lokar floor shift kit on a T-350 and was an easy install.Can,t wait to see how it all works out.

I also went with the Lokar, type shifter, need to decide if emergency brake will also be relocated in the center.

The kids ant happy, they just were informed they getting groomed this week!
they realy like it!
