Proper Engine Stand Use ?

I just bought a nifty four wheel engine stand to mount my 292 on to , I'm curious if maybe I don't know how to correctly position the cradle's four ams....

Anyone have pictures of the back end of a L6 on an engne stand ? .

4 cyl., 6cyl., small block V8, and big block V8 all have the exact same bellhousing bolt pattern after 1963 so surely someone has a picture. If not I'll slap a block up mine and snap one. Here's how the arms go on my two stands: horizontal slots to the bottom and the two arms in those slots go to the bottom left and bottom right bellhousing to block holes. The other two arms go in the vertical slots and bolt to the holes just to each side of top center. I'm envious of your 4 wheeler stand because my 3 wheeler gets real tricky with one of my Straight 8 engines mounted on it.

I think that's a darn good picture from Hotrod and here's a few tips to go along with it. Get a stick of 3/8-16 all thread and cut it into four 6 or 8 inch sections and screw them into the block to be guide pins for the mount arms. Take mount plate out of the engine stand and place arms onto four guide pins and move plate around till it's about centered top to bottom and side to side. Tighten the bolts that hold the arms to the plate to lock them into this position. (you can put nuts on the guide pins to double lock them if necessary). Now remove pins one at a time and replace with regular bolts and finally hoist whole assembly up and slide tube back into engine stand. This is much easier than trying to get everything aligned with the plate in the stand. On a V8 it's balanced when tube is in line with the camshaft freeze plug; let us know where the balance point is on an I6.

I excpect this to be the best $50 I ever spent .



You'd all just DIE if you ever used a factory engine stand ~ there's nothing adjustable , it just bolts on one way only...... most have a nifty gear drive rotator too .

I recently gave away my old VW factory engine stand .

Is it a Harbor Freight engine stand? Might want to check the welds out really well.

I don't think so ~ this looks fairly old .

I just looked on craigslist and Lo ! this one guy had a bunch of them .

I agree , Harbor Freight tools can be dangerous , nonetheless I use them often.

Nate, here's a couple of pictures of how I mounted my 235, without the bell housing, on my engine stand. It came out well centered, so it rotated fairly easily. The upper arms are just used to space the bolts out to match the lower arms.

THANK YOU ALL *VERY* MUCH ! .

I've still not removed the clutch & flywheel but will do so soon , other things , burst graywater pipes inside the wall , daily driver car dying , truck deciding it wants to run on 5 cylinders , SWMBO asking for some attention , sciatica pain and so on pluscfar more have kept me busy but I will persevere and get this 292 up ere long , stand by please .
