sweet video. you're near stanley? doesn't look like anything burned up, but i know that area got hit hard this summer. hope you didn't have to deal with wildfires. jon
Jon- I'm about 90 miles from Stanley in Hailey. We had smoke from the fires in Stanley and from another fire near Pine. Smokey all summer, but the fires are out now. The Stanley fire burned over 150,000 acres. It stayed north of town though, so driving through Stanley you can't see much burn. very cool! i missed out on that fire, as i was home waiting for my wife to "pop out the pup"as she says. my dad was sent to that fire, though and he said it was "gettin' after it for a while there." there was a massive shortage of firefighters, too, because so many fires had started all at the same time. sometimes, all we firefighters can do is move people out of the way and wait for the snow to fly. glad you weren't in the way of that one. Love the willys, by the way! jon
Jon- My folks have a place in Stanley, but luckily it was south of the blaze and out of harms way. The day I was there taking pictures of the fire, I went out and watched the sun set and watched the fire burn in the dark, about a quarter mile from the fire's edge. The sound it made was unreal. Pretty amazing to watch the threes go off in the dark and then send burning embers miles down wind. I could see all the spot fires starting in the dark. The power of a big fire, as you know, is incredible. When I was there last month with the Willys, driving around in the hills, we drove through some of the burn areas, and it is a surreal landscape with black stick spoking through a blanket of white snow.
