John,

The faux patina on your truck looks very cool. I read with great interest the process that you went through to get the look of "old paint". Does your "old paint" tend to transfer when touched, like really old weathered paint does, like if you brush up against it, do you have orange on your finger? Also, did you take the lower cab and front clip down to bare metal before applying the primer? One last question, how long after you applied the top coat did you sand it to take down the gloss?

Great build thread. Love the stance on both the truck and Camaro!

The paint does not transfer when touched.

I did not strip the paint off the cab or doghouse. I sanded it with 80 grit, wiped it down with xylene, let it dry and then rolled on the primer. (See post #159 https://talk.classicparts.com/showthread.php?t=13928&page=11)

I waited 48 hours before sanding and deglossing.

Webshots Left Me Hanging

Most of the photos here on my build thread were linked to via Webshots. Well American Greetings sold the Webshots website to "Smile" and now the majority of the photos on this build thread are no longer linked.

Funny, "Smile" isn't really what I am thinking right now...

I'll start rebuilding this build thread using my new Photobucket account.

Deglossing?

what exactly did you use for the deglossing? some chemicals are so harsh they take all coats off. I am doing the same paint on my '72 c-10 short bed.

Purple Power cleaner degreaser (available at Advance Auto Parts), wiped it on full strength (using nitril gloves), let it sit till dry, then wiped it down with window cleaner.

Neals Farms

Bitter cold here over the weekend so I spent some time replicating a logo of Neals Farms. This is the place my maternal Grandfather worked.

My mother gave me an old milk bottle that had the logo on it. I also have a mechanical pencil that my grandfather used to carry with him. I uploaded photos of these into my Autocad Inventor Program and made the following:

I am thinking of painting this logo on the door of my truck instead of the "Hot Rod Fabricators" logo I designed a few years back.

Here's the milk bottle, and the mechanical pencil:

Lastly, here's the "Hot Rod Fabricators" logo:

UPDATE 03-02-2014:
Spent some time today photochopping some previous ideas I have discussed, along with a new twist.

Hot Rod Fabricators: Chevrolet Script (Photo Below)

I used the Chevrolet Tailgate Script I created to do a new shop truck door lettering concept... kind of industrial, less is more, funky old school lettering.​

Then I used my CAD program to get a visual of the "Hot Rod Fabricators" sign a created a few years back, but never did anything with.​

Neils Dairy Farms (Photo Below)

And finally I used the CAD program to get a visual of the "Neils Dairy Farms" logo I created about this time a year ago. My maternal Grandfather worked for Neils in the 50's and 60's. I created the logo from an old milk bottle my Mother gave me.​

Since we live in an area where they developed all the farms, I wanted to used our town name and relate to a farm. (horses). Area is best known for a sausage plant, landfills, prisons (that closed) and a water treatment plant. This is the last un-development (or the most) land in our county. (Fairfax Virginia).

01-20-2013: Two Tone Paint Line Trim - Back of Cab

Installed some modified bed side trim across the back of the cab at the two tone paint break line.

Pretty subtle, not very noticeable in the photos below, but it visually ties the custom cab b-pillar trim panels together.

01-20-2013 More Side Trim Pondering

I mocked up some side trim on the truck, just to get a visual of how it would look. I am still 'on the fence" as to if I want the trim at all.

Comments?

I personally like the short spear look vs. the long stock spear.

That is Absolutely Awesome.
A great way to separate the two tone, or just to tie the sails together.
There was the actual piece meant for that area for sale for $250 on another forum, but I'd do what you did and save the money.

Hmmm I never knew there was a piece made for this, was it OEM or a custom piece? Got a link you could post, I'd like to see that.

Glad ya liked it! It was really easy to install, mostly measuring, laying out the hole pattern and drilling. My poor ole truck... it seems I am always drilling holes into it.
