Oil wetted I guess.

Pulled the air cleaner assembly from my newly acquired '52 228. Here it is as disassembled as I can get it:

I believe it is the "oil wetted", not "oil bath" filter mentioned in the Maintenance Manual.

It was dry as a bone.

Instead of servicing this filter often, I'd like to find a paper filter to replace the stock element. Anyone else do this? If so, what did you use?

Take the element with you to the store, open boxes and find one that fits.

You could look if there is an oil filling level mark on the inside or outside of the pan ?
The shape reminds med of the old fashion type filter pan but i have never seen such a steel wired filter assy ?

And like Russ said , you'd be well advised to take the filter sans msh to Pep Boys etc. and spend some time test fitting filter elements .

These are the least efficient air filters GM used , at least this one , being from a Passenger Car, has the huge echo chamber built into it so you don't hear the carby's intake honk very much .

I'd cleam it up and sell / trade it away , use a paper element or (better) oil bath one instead .

Put the decals in ot and some one will give you good $ for it I am sure .

No oil mark. As Nate says, the the chamber is strictly for noise control. GMC Maintenance Manual refers to this as a "oil wetted" filter. Instructions say to "clean element throughly in cleaning fluid" and "pour oil on element" every 1000 miles (200 miles in dusty environments).

I'm going to find a paper element that will take the place of the element.

I went to NAPA, they checked the measurements and got one for me it doesn't sit down all the way as it should. I would like to see what you come with for yours. I use the paper filter for daily use and put on the oil bath for shows.
