I was hoping somebody could help provide me with a high resolution photo of the tailgate script on a 1947 -1953 tailgate.

I'd like to make a masking template. I've made them for 1954-1987 Stepsides and for 60-66 fleetsides.

Once I create the cad file I'll have them available for free. The file can be used by a sign shop to make the masking template.

Ideally the photo would be taken from at least 20 feet behind the truck.

Additionally I would need to know the height of the letters, as well as the overall width of the Chevrolet script, from the left hand side of the "c" to the right hand side of the upper horizontal bar of the "T", as shown below.

54-87 Stepside letters are 3-3/4" high letters x 36-1/2" width:

Thanks in advance,

John

Tailgate Script

In order to your question about the tailgate i made these photos. Would it be posseble to use the masking template when wanting to repaint the CHEVROLET letters ? Hope that the photos will be of any use ?

Aditional measurements ; hight letters 7.8 cm = 2.8 inch , with upper line from C to T is 76.2 cm = 30 inch.
Note ; The curves of the letters are different then the onces showing on your tailgate.

Martinius.

Martinius, Thanks for the photos and dimensions. I'll work on the files this week.

As for the GMC... Post up the photo's and dimensional data... my first truck was a GMC so that makes me a GMC guy too!

Could a couple of you guys confirm the following by checking you tailgates?

Questions:

1.0 The second E is different from the first E? Notice the top horizontal member is shorter on the first E than on the second.

2.0 The O seemed to be smaller, in height, than the other letters.

Thanks Spurgeon. I'll try and get another photo of a stock gate that doesn't have these issues.

Martinius,

Are the letters on the tailgate you posted photos of painted or vinyl?

John

Tailgate letters

Hey John

The letters have normally the same size all of them. What you see is an illusion ! Mines are vinyl and some of them are not proper installed by the former owner . But the sizes are right . I would like to paint the letters later as they should be.

I made the cad files, based on the vinyl letters that Martinius posted, but corrected for uniform height & width. As previously stated these files can be used by a sign shop to create a masking template, thus allowing the letters on the tailgate to be painted. If you would like a copy of the files PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.

I have a picture of my tailgate. It has vinyl letters on it. I have a set of white letters purchased from our host that I can send you for reference if you want and I'll provide measurements as well. 14 1/4" wide overall, 2 3/4" tall.

There you go! I have yet to score me a GMC tailgate, so I cannot help with this endeavor. Nice to see the representation, however! :D

Well Nate, I can't really argue the Chevy part, as you know, my GMC does, in fact, sport a Chevy engine, (and Chassis). I would, however, take you to task on the "Girlie" part...

Just joined here specifically to ask about the lettering.
I am going to get some of this style lettering done locally by a guy who will do it in engine turned gold. He has this for some fire departments he does lettering on. So I want this style lettering, will the file you have enable this guy to cut out letters? He says he needs a pdf file for the lettering, he has some but not older ones like this.

Not to be a wet blanket, Your cad system should be able to import fonts. I do believe there has been a font made to imitate the 50s style chevrolet font that is found on valve covers. Old corvette valve covers were scripted using the same font.
would be cool for the resto mod guys
