Engine Stuck!

OK, a couple of questions, as Steve asked, what are bog gloves? What if I try putting the truck in 3rd gear and jack up the back wheel and try to turn it that way? Is that putting too much pressure on the corrosion and rings?

Nate, I really didn't want to hear that last paragraph about a replacement! Is that determined by not getting it unstuck?

One more, what the heck is IIRC? Once I get the answer, I am sure it will be a smack on the forehead!

IIRC:rolleyes: by "bog gloves" Nate means a heavy pair of gloves that will prevent you from ripping your hands open on the ring gear while you try to rock the engine free when grabbing the flywheel. Maybe jacking up the truck and trying that method will put too much strain on the tranny. Patience is the key here. Engine SHOULD free up. Give it some more time and make sure the cylinders are full of whatever you are using to free them up. I have heard that Deisel fuel anti-gel works especially well for this, but have not tried it myself. Not to worry as there are plenty of good running 235 engines out there that NOBODY wants and can often be had for next to nothing or even nothing. I got mine from a great guy in Maryland. Long drive to get it, but it runs great and came complete from tail shaft to radiator fan and was FREE.

Oh, and BTW Nate is the KING of acronyms (as well as mechanicals:D). We have all had our share of trying to figure him out at times. Welcome to the club:rolleyes:.

OOPS ~ Fat Fingers Strike Again !

BIG gloves as in heavy leather welding or gardening gloves , the teeth on the ring gear will shred your palms if you try to turn the engine sans gloves .

No , you needn't quit yet ~ you can continue filling the cylinders with Diesel fuel (remember : you've gotta keep adding it to keep it wet in there else it won't unstick) .

There are some other steps you can take to loosen it up that involve partial disassembly but then you'll rapidly $pend the lolly , cheaper to relace the engine .

Turning the rear wheel isn't going to give you sufficient leverage to turn the engine , sorry .

After letting it soak a month you can try dragging the truck with a chain and letting the clutch out in third gear .

GTFOH is just me having a little fun:D. First time I ever saw it, it was written out in one long word with no spaces in Tom Wolfe's "The Bonfire Of The Vanities". Great book if you have the time.

It generally INFERS like Nate says that "you must be joshing me" even though LITERALLY it is "joisy" for "leave this place".:D

DPO refers to the P-revious O-wner. Not quite sure what the "D" is for (dumb???, dead???, derelict???, dopey???) Probably stands for DEPRESSED because he sold or otherwise got rid of such a fine machine as an AD pickup:D.

That did it! The engine is turning over very easy now. I hooked up the battery yesterday and hit the starter and the engine spun so fast, I thought the starter wasn't engaging, but it was!

Good !

Now , drain out all that nasty , Diesel contaminated oil and re-fill with 10W-30 or other thin stuff , re-adjust the valves , set the points gap (or dwell to 33° if you can find a dwell meter) , set the base timing to ball on pointer , gap the spark plugs to .035" fill the carby with some fresh gasoilne and let 'er rip ~ .
 
One Month

So there you have it.

Howards first post on this topic was a month ago. That's how long it takes to free up a stuck engine. Patience, patience, patience. Can't wait to hear how it runs.

Well... I do have a confession, I did not keep it "wet" the whole time. So it may have been a shorter length of time. But patience is something that is highly recommended!!
 
That And......

Not forcing it .

Forcing it usualy jambs the engine tight to where you'll need
to shatter the pistons to break it loose .

Or , it'll damage the rusty piston rings so badly that even after you've tuned it to the Nth. degree and it starts instantly . runs perfectly and idles silently , it'll smoke like a County Mosquito Fogger and really pi$$ you off.....

Remember : DO NOT TRY TO START IT UNTIL YOU'VE CHANGED THE OIL ! .

As soon as it runs and idles , gets warmed up , change the oil again .
