I believe you have just taken the big fish story from me, with pictures no less. Years ago a guy called to have our wrecker come pick up his Chrysler station wagon which had lost a wheel. When examined the wheel, hub, drum, everything had come off past the bearing retainer nut which still had the cotter pin in place. The outer bearing and race were completely gone. He looked at us and in all innocence said, "Gee, you would think it would give some kind of warning". I recommended the first thing that needed to be done was to make an appointment with an ear doctor.

I have been responsible for a fleet of light trucks used for field work on the Texas Gulf Coast. On several newer model pickup trucks the disc calipers corrode/oxidize and ruin the disc and bracke shoes in a very short time (20,000 miles). Once the calipers lock up (fail to return when the brake pedal is released) there is no warning until the wheel begins to smoke and someone starts honking at you because they believe your vehicle is on fire. This has happened to me twice in the past. Once I was at my office the condition was made obvious by smoke and fumes. The second time I was driving through Houston on a late Friday evening when this happened. I pulled off the road and monkeyed with the wheel after it cooled off until the caliper returned to position. I drove about 90 miles home using only the E brake since the problem was in the front end. I was really careful and somewhat lucky, made it back.

No warning lights and not enough brake pressure to pull the vehicle when braking.

This can destroy wheel bearings and score spindles.
