Hello to all,
Just purchased this truck yesterday and I really like it.
needs some work, but it's a runner right now the way it is. New carb kit is in order and the manual trans will pop out of gear if you don't rest your hand on the tree. Other than that runs good, goting to remove the hubs and repack and inspect the bearings and brakes.
Don't know if it's related or not but if you try and shift the lever on the colume gently in will lock its self in neutrel. when this happens I go under the hood to the two linkage arms and reengage. there are some bushings there and they have some play in them for sure...any Ideals on why its locking in neutrel ? If you are firm with the shifting theres no problems.

Welcome to the forums! The folks here are photo buffs, so if you have any snapshots of your truck, be sure to share them. I'm afraid I can't be of any assistance regarding your shifter issue, but I'm sure someone will chime in soon.

Welcome Bud.
Taking the play out of the linkages and a firm and deliberate "H" pattern shift should improve your lock-up in nuetral. That being said, mine will lock up in 1st if 'n I forget to be deliberate and try to push/slide into 2nd. :D

Your popping out of gear is another problem I used to have until I acquired a "new" (different) transmission. I believe the problem is caused by worn gears...

Here's a trick we use to find the source of a trans that jumps out of gear. On level ground have a helper shift the trans from neutral to high a couple times so you can see which way it moves the lever on the side of the trans. Leave in neutral then slide under the truck and disconnect the shifter rod from that lever on the trans and with your hand move that lever into high gear position. You will be left with just high gear but if your engine runs decent and you slip the clutch a little it will take off in high gear. Once going accelerate and decelerate to see if it jumps out of gear. If it does it's in the trans itself and about a 90% chance the synchro drum is worn out. If it doesn't it's in the linkage and can be adjusted to where it won't jump out. We have a really steep hill (for Texas) just a little ways down the road that we can disconnect the rod at the top and hold the clutch in till it picks up enough speed to ease off in a higher gear with no problem.
 
Thanks for all the info. I will probably pull the trans at some time and see what could be done.
I pulled the front drums today and they were really free spinning and looked like there were plenty of high pressure grease in them. Don't know why they were so hot, maybe the bearings are worn or to loose, either way it's all getting replaced tomorrow.

Today I ordered a new belt, valve cover gasket, carb rebuild kit, bearings for frt hub's.
All the glass needs replacing, and the steering needs a little help.
I will take some pics tomorrow.

Read through the How to assemble an AD thread at the top of the page, It will explain alot. Ask away any questions you may have. My trans was jumping out of 3rd, it was the synchro. If you are replacing the trans, I reccommend the s10 5speed swap and an open rear end, such as an s10 4x4 or a Colorado if you want to stick with the 6 lug wheels.
