Stupid oil question.

Why does the oil remain in the oil canister when engine is not running (I haven’t found a reference to a check valve). and....what is the easiest way to empty it out to do an oil change? What method is everyone using?

Every old shop used to have a hand held suction gun for this. You sucked out most of the oil and then used shop towels to sop up the remainder.
