Hey everyone. Fairly new to the forum, but I am putting a 50 pickup together. Full body off restoration going back original except I have a 235 not a 216. I am working on the cab (new floor, corners, etc. right now, but while I am waiting want to make sure everything is sound with the running gear. Just drained rear end and put a new seal in b/c it was leaking and want to check the transmission? What is the best gear lube to put in these. 90lb lube for both or does the transmission call for something else?

I will have to look. Probably not in digital, b/c I started 9 years ago. It sit for 7, and I finally got my shop finished and started last year. I have the frame painted and ready to go, my best friend is a body man, and is in the process of adding on to his shop, so I am waiting on finishing the cab. I am not the best at body work.
 
90wt is fine as is 80-140. We use Torqo in a lot of the ones we do but it will leak from areas regular lube doesn't. Both use the same lube since the lube can go from the trans to the rear end and visa-versa if it still has the torque tube.

It still has a tube, but I didn't know the fluid went back in forth. My dad is the mechanic. I just learned enough to be dangerous!
 
Not only back and forth, but some of it goes down on the ground underneath. I have used Hypo 90 as well as the 80-140 (Valvoline I think). Make sure that valuable U-joint get some lube as well.

Torque Tube Leaks

Well no ;

If the gear oil in the tranny runs past the Oakie Bushing , it'll overfill the rear end and leave the tranny dry , causing it to explode wilst you're driving sooner or later .

Back in the 1960's & 1970's , it was common for poor Farm kids to drain the excess gear oil from the rear end and pour it back in the tranny every two or three weeks....
