I do believe the part number is Tailgate Latch has part # C582505. Chevy 1988 year pickup. Got it on the internet for $50.00 Latches, cables, rods and handle,

You are correct could place a nut at the rear of the pin to delete the big latch plate at the other end as you mentioned. Also when drilling the holes, on lands in the steel loop support plate and one is just on the steel end. Looks like counter sunk hardware may not be needed nuts (3/8) and bolts are way out of the way and recessed. . pictures later tonight. I broke two drill bits.

I just think this would be a cool mod if it all works out.

I been preoccupied lately with ageing in-laws, so my project is on hold right now for several weeks, the circle of life can be cruel, I wonder how some people can afford assistant living. Lakeroadster thanks for asking on this project, I will once again start on the task of modifying the other latch.

If someone's a carpenter, that don't mean make fenders or tailgates out of wood, LOL Keep the cabinetry in the kitchen.....

In 1977 I imported a 1953 VW Oval window Beetle from England where it had been junked due to excessive rust problems ~ the previous owner was a very good carpenter who'd made the running boards and rear bumper brackets out of wood , perfectly finished then painted glossy black .

You had to get really close before you realized it wasn't steel ~ a true craftsman but when the rust came through the hood and other body panels , they refused to give it the M.O.T. safety disc necessary to drive .

Hey Steve,
Not to Muddy up the water here but have you seen the new pick-up tail gates
(I believe on Toyota's and GM Trucks, Maybe other's?) But they have a Soft Close
system that when you open the tailgate, it has some thing that slows it down from slamming open!
I am Thinking that would be pretty COOL to incorporate into our tailgate's
But not sure what makes it work!
