PCV valve pics

ok, so i had no idea what thing thing was, or what it did. i noticed it in the manual, so i figured it was a standard thing, but i'm still a little hazy on why it's there, so maybe you guys could enlighten me some more. what the heck does PCV even stand for?:confused: here's a bunch of pics from lots of different angles. hope that helps.:)

PCV (Positive crankcase ventilation) Very Very important to have. I don't know a lot about the older engines but all PCV's are the same. Without this your engine will build too much internal pressure and blow out oil at any given gasket. If you fix one leak it will create another and will be a vicious cycle from there:mad: . So whatever you do keep the PCV in. Nate will be able to go into more depth with these engines. Hope this helps.
 
Thanx for the pics, I like to modify my ol truck to improve its running but I also want to do those modifications in an original style so these pics help a lot, didn't want to just bung a modern pcv in an obvious place, I think I can make mine look very similar to yours now

MORE Goodies !

What it will do is : cause your engine to explode so you'd best remove it carefully and mail it to _me_ for proper disposal.... :D

Yeah , right ! :p the PCV valve proper is the black rusty cylinder screwed into the brass elbow sticking out of the breather , soak it well to clean it out , don't be worried at the amazing amout of toxic waste that drains out of it . a PCV system keep the inside ofyour engine clean and a clean engine is a happy engine that loasts longer and rund better too .

You should consider cleaning out that big old breather tube too ~ it's full of baffles and sludge ~ remove it and send SWMBO & the kids off for the day , drag out your old charcoal BBQ and stoke it to red hot , lay the breather tube on the grill and close the lid , let if cook for a few hours , it'll begin to smoke & stink something fierce so be _sure_ SWMBO isn't going to come home soon ! . once cooled down , tap it to shake out all the burned ash , DO NOT EVER bead blast a breather ! .

I notice you have a " Dual Action " typ fuel pump ~ this is a great find , what it is , is this : a vacuum pump built into the lower half of your fuel pump , it will ensure your vacuum wipers run perfectly at all speeds and loads ~ obviously someone liked this truck and equipped it properly ....

Engine idling , test for vacuum at each of the ports on the bottom half of the fuel pump . you'll be wanting to connect this and I'll tell you hoew if it still works . if not , don't panic , just mail it off to a vintage fuel pump rebuilder .
 
I told you that Nate would go into more depth:D ! I still crack up at the whole grilling the tube.
 
Nope Nate is wrong!!!! you have to send the whole truck over to me in England to get it sorted out properly, only us Brits can deal with blocked pcv and breather tubes, cooking it on your bbq! how amateur, lol

brit 50, just visited my grandpa's old truck (which is now sitting, don't even get me started) but anyway, his truck was supposedly all original, and i noticed the pcv setup was a little different from mine. hope these pics are clear enough. also, i was looking through my stuff today and realized i have an extra pcv valve in my spares box dunno if you need an original or not, or what kind of shape it's in on the inside. i'll post some pics if you're interested.

I remember the old style crankcase breathers,but not PCV valves on the old trucks/cars. Is this some kind of retrofit? I do know that on newer vehicles,if the PCV valve isn't working correctly the motor won't "explode" but will blow smoke out every orifice on it. LOL! IE:oil filler,valve cover gasket,etc.

That's _not_ a PCV valve ~ it's the standard Road Draft Tube on Granpas 216 there....
 
Nate, fired up the ol barby at the weekend an got it real hot, put the draft tube and opened a couple of buds and sat down to wait, let it burn an smoke till it was cool enough to handle, tapped out all the crap and muck from the inside, and a lot fell out, but.......................

It tasted damn awful and I busted a tooth on it, what am I doing wrong????
should i marianade it overnight? use the steak tenderizer? more salt?

Always marinate for at least 12 hours ! :D

Now , rinse it out untill the little chunks stop coming out , you can strain the gas or kero through felt or what not and re-use several times then just wire brush it untill no more old paint or rust dimples , rise it off with ether (starting fluid) and paint it glossy black in super thin ghost coats , allowing about 15 minutes flash off time between coats , it'll look horrible untill the 5th or 6th coat then it'll flow out and look really good .

I don't use primer on engine parts as they'll chip too easily if you do .

ok, so i pulled the whole thing out yesterday, and i'd like to make sure we're clear on what's what, so i'll post another picture.



correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm thinking i should remove "B" and unscrew "C" from "D"??? then bake "C", right?? "A" is just a part of "B" that won't come off?? just don't want to cook the wrong part, not that anyone would ever make that mistake, i just don't want to be the first one. :D thanks!!

Positive Crankcase Ventilation. P--C--V. Just to let you know, it was I believe optional. I would love to have one of those instead of the road draft tube. It vents gases from the lower crankcase into the rocker cover. without it (or a road draft tube) pressure would build up inside the crankcase and blow oil through every nook, cranny and gasket it can find.

Ha, Real Funny who woke up Chiro:p The Original Grille Master I believe ? You guy's with that fancy PCV system. I will stick with my old down draft tube. Bonus is it keeps some of the right front suspension lubed while I drive.

I Vote for #E which is above the brass nipple on #B That is what you want to get apart. Must likely stuck but with some little Love and Care will come apart. Sometimes help's to turn some the other way then try and loosen. Other times get out the smoke wrench just be careful. Best to get the unit out of the truck and on a bench. Good Luck !
 
Just grill it all!

I promise we won't say a word if you grill the wrong part!:rolleyes:
