Lakeroadsters' Build Thread: '65 SWB Step

The side trim is used stock side trim for a 64-66 LWB Fleetside... just moved around and reconfigured.

Yeah, I don't miss the timeclock. Life is good.

I was just thinking that I'd like to see the back at a slant. How about one more pic with even more slant? Maybe at the same angle as the smaller trim slant?

But yes, I'm liking the slant over the squared tail end.

What method were you going to do to get the lettering on there?
If a stencil, how were you going to make the stencil?
 
Try and find a sign shop that's been around awhile. We've got Morris sign studio here and yea now they do alot of vinyl and stencil work. But they use to freehand brush all the semi truck doors around here and still get a kick out of the opportunity to bust out the brushes.
Back in the early 80's I worked the body shop at a GMC dealer and got to watch them work on many occasions.
 
Truck Rally Caps

Mocked up some stock Chevy Truck Rally Caps on my aluminum slotted mags just to see how it looked....

What say ye... better with the caps, or leave it alone?








 
OEM 1970s vintage caps look ok I guess. I would try and find some caps, stainless if possible, that go better with cool old-timey slotted wheels. I had some wheels very similar to those, 15X8, a few years ago. They had cup-style caps for the rear and none on the front, to clear hubs on 4WD.
It's your truck, do what you like.
You could buy some new chrome dust covers in the mean-time.

Small Caps and Big Bores

Small caps won't work, I have a set. Front wheels have big bore centers for 4x4 applications (as Steve mentioned above). It's a truck, with 6 lug wheels and truck tires, so truck caps seemed logical, or leave it as is with no caps ;)

Old Men & Old Trucks

Glad to hear you're not missing the Time Clock ~ I don't have to punch one and I'm getting ready to ' pull the pin ' in 13 months .

I kinda of like the side trims .
 
One other thing, I remember about the OEM caps. It was hard to wash around the nuts, ah, well, you know, stuffing a mitt or sponge in there.
The fake chrome plastic ones on my '01 Chevy 2500 are even harder to keep clean.
I think LMC sells chrome cup type caps both open end and closed end, but, if they are not stainless, the chrome is crappy import chrome.

Thanks for the comments guys. I think I'll be leaving the wheels as is. The newer plastic caps all just seem cheesy and cheap.​

New Question.. Cab Corner Splash / Gravel Guards for Step Side Bed

At $80 bucks a pair from LMC :eek: that just seems way pricey, plus I try to avoid putting communist chinese pieces parts on my ole vintage American iron. So I'm going to take a stab at making some of these myself. Looks like they bolt to the floor of the cab and have a brace that attaches to the rear cab brace?

Anybody here have these on their truck that could get supply a better photo?​

As to the Center Caps;
If you like the ones you mocked up, then do it.
Or, there might be other cap selections available in your bore size at your local Tire/Wheel Store.

Thanks. I'm finding that often when I first mock-up an idea that I really like it at the time. Then after I wait a while the newness wears off. I think that is called "change for the sake of change".​
