It is really not very low. It still has 4" or so of ground clearance.

My bug is MUCH lower. It has less than 2" of clearance.

Ohhhhhh, Nate...! Do you see that bug??? After seeing what happens to an AD, I can only imagine the fate of that betel!

I could send you a picture of how to paint your AD, if you'd like. (It's in my head!)

Late Model Beetle

Yep , I sure do ! looks like a 49 state car to me .

My buddy used to have a '65 and his benchmark for lowering it was : couldn't clear a pack of cigaretts lain down

Of course , this makes the car not only ride like a Buckboard but , it's pretty much undrivable as it catches on everything , not good (nor safe !) for commuting or freeway use .

Nice to see a few Bugs left , even here in La La Land (home of 100 % rust free old cars) the kiddie ruined nearly all of them and then junked them out .

This one is a remarkably solid car that almost got crushed.

It was advertised as a rusty bug for $200. The only rust is surface rust where somebody had started sanding and shot just a little primer on the spots they sanded. There is NO rust through or even serious pitting....not even under the battery.

I offered the guy $100 and he took it.

I have since added dropped spindles and disc brakes on the front, narrowed the front beam 5" , put on smart car tires, and freshened the motor (new piston set and valve springs).

I'm still under the $1000 mark!


I would LOVE to find an AD in this shape.

I think it is a really late 74.

Here's how to tell the model year of any VW built after 1964 : the _third_ digit of the VIN is always the model year .

So if this car is a '74 , the VIN begins like this: 114.......

Super Beetles are 131 models so if it was a '74 Super , it'd look like : 134

Convertibles are 151's .

Prolly WAY more info than anyone ever cared to know but I am after all , VW Nate .

Have you noticed how kindly we drop the first part of your name when we mention you NATE!

Dad was hot rodding around the neighborhood and somebody called the cops on him.

They didn't figure out who he was or where he lived, but they were driving around for quite a while and set up radar in the area for a couple of days.

He dodged the bullet that time, but didn't want to get it out with the loud pipes again.............so we made silencers from left-over hearder tubes and other misc junk.

They look like crap, but they work good and can be removed in 15 seconds.

I also modified the air cleaner base so that it was no longer low-profile...it now clears the distributor cap/plug wires.

As to why you're running a power steering pulley on the alternator and thus drastically reducing the charge rate......

It is a Moroso alternator pulley. This motor has a nasty habit of slinging belts at 6500-6700 RPMs.

It did it in the camaro that this motor used to be....and it has done it in this truck. So far the latest altemator mount with the turnbuckle for tightening seems to help. It has gone 7000 RPMs a couple of times and kept the belt.
