Bringing it back one more time! Being the railfan that I am, I am privy to the fact that Union Pacific Railroad is celebrating their 150th year in existance. While looking at their 150th celebration website, I came upon, what I think, is an awesome picture taken in 1958. It shows the last running of UP's steam generation locomotives, and lo and behold, there is a Chevy AD waiting to be a part of our heritage! Enjoy! Ken
Up 844! I got to mark off 1 of the items on my "bucket list" Friday when Union Pacific's 844 steam locomotive came to town! Bill Hanlon and I drove up to Cleveland, Tx on Friday and got to see the "Living Legend" up close and personal. This was the last steamer that UP bought in 1944 and it has been UP's "good will" ambassador since the early 60's. It made a run from home base in Wyoming to Houston and will be on its way back from Houston to Wyoming on Monday! This bad boy, when fully loaded with fuel and and water, weighs over 454 tons! What Ken didn't say .... Yes, we both stood out in a light rain in the high 50s (at least he was smart enough to wear long sleeves) for almost an hour and then couldn't find the two pennies we had put on the track to get squashed.
Union Pacific 844 Hey Guys, I'm an Engineer for the Union Pacific RR out of Longview TX. Last April I was fortunate enough to Run/Pilot the UP844 on UP's 150th Birthday Tour. (Corsicana - Hearne TX.) As you can imagine it was a great experience. There were people taking pictures on every single crossing. The Boys in the foreground are my Grandsons. I have a 65 Chevy that I have owned since 1976. I converted it to 4x4 in 1984. It has 1976 axles under it. 1970 396ci with steel 427 crank turbo 400 tranny and NP205 transfer case setting on 33s. OLD TRAINS AND TRUCKS
Totally jealous! I was fortunate enough to take a very short train ride (four miles or so) on a steamer a couple years ago out in Colorado. I'd love to take a ride on that big iron horse like the one you operated!! Thanks for sharing the photos with us. Damon
