old49chevys restoration thread

I've used the repro chrome on my truck and the 50 and 53 I built. It all seemed to fit (as well as the grille fits anyway...It is P.I.T.A.) Mine has held up very well, since '06 and it lives outside. It costs around $1100 to chrome out one of these trucks, last time I checked.

Wheels & Chrome

Zig the wheels are just rattel can paint for now.. I just wanted to see if I wanted red wheels or black. Still havent made up my mind.... what do you guys think?? Im pretty sure im going to get wide white wall tires also.
Thanks Jesse

RED of course.....

Re - chrome things too as the original stuff is the best , seriously $pendy tho' :( .

My take on it , remember : it's YOUR truck and you're footing the bill so build it to please you and you'll be happy as you roll down the Highway holding that big , fat steering wheel...... :D .

Sleeve ? like a cylinder sleeve ? any Machinist Jobber should have it in stock...

Were the cylinders egged ? or severely tapered ? (the '57 235 in my old '46 3100 had .014" taper and were fine , these are NOT designed like modern engines !) .

ccharr, the wallis has pretty much been put on the back burner for now.. I really just want to get my truck done first.lol All im really missing now is one sleeve, the rest of the engine is pretty much done. The head has been rebuilt it has all new bearings and n.o.s timing gears. I just have a little more work to do on the governer. I also have all new sheet metal for it (fenders, hood, grill, gas tank) If anyone knows where I can find a sleeve let me know I'v been looking for like 2 years now... Im starting to think I might have to make one.. ccharr it will probably be for sale some day after I get it done!
thanks Jesse

Thanks for the update Jesse, I'm about ready to sell the Massey It has been sitting to long and as all old Iron if you do not use it it goes down hill anyway.
I'll keep the sleeve in mind as I travel around and talk to others.
BTW have you seen this or talked to these fellows about maybe having parts for the Wallis? http://www.happyoldiron.com/1176541.htm
Again, Thanks for the update.
Good Luck

priorities and all

Jesse - i was on a tight budget, so i had the time to search for some very decent (not show) original chrome pieces and replaced what i could on my truck that was bad shape. What i could not find, i just had painted instead with the plan to swap it out for better chrome later (or re-chromed if i ever find someone good that i can afford). Some MINOR pieces i thought i HAD to have, i bought the reproduction chrome. If i had the money for wide white walls, i would have gone that route, again - maybe something down the road.

Here is a picture of an all black with wide whites (NOT MINE) to give you an idea. This black on black is a very classic look. If you kept the RED wheels, then keep in mind - not much would show with the hubcaps (red lettering) and even less if you put on beauty rings. I think that little pop of red would be less expected and of course less formal -it all depends upon your personality and what you are going for. (my vote would be for red)

Either way, it is going to look great. Congrats!

Thanks for the input! I think i will take all my old stuff to the chrome platers and get some prices and go from there.

Nate the three half way good cylinder sleeves I have all have some taper and are a little egged but that doesnt bother me too much. wallis used wet sleeves and the other ones I have are cracked and one has a big groove in it from the wrist pin came loose. Im pretty sure if I dont find one I will just make all four of them.
Thanks Jesse
